It took 20 years to diagnosis a sebaceous cyst!!

I really appreciate the advent of modern medicine in treating even the most contagious diseases. However I strongly believe that for perfect treatment and cure, diagnosis is the basic requirement. But unfortunately,on many occasions even experienced doctors tend to diagnosis wrongly leading to poor treatment. Some of my experiences are described here for the benefit of general public.
It started like a small bump in the lower part of my cheek, above the neck at the age of 17-when I was studying for Engineering.Occasionally Its size increased and within weeks comes to normal. It was like a pebble without any pain. When I have shown it to the doctor he told me that nothing to worry and can be neglected. However it continued as an irritation to me-without creating much trouble.
The real problem started at the age of about 26 when one day its size increased and the entire area looked like swollen. Then I met a surgeon, who advised to open it as it is infected. The opening was a with small incision and looked O.K.-but it took about 20 days for curing The doctor told me that it is a Gland and that is why it took more time for healing.Any way I was happy that it is removed. But to my surprise,a small pebble like ball was remaining in that area.Again I met the Doctor and he told me that nothing to worry and it will not infect again.
It was quite O.K.for about 2 years, but again the area swollen -this time much bigger in size.In fact it was so big that public thought that I have some serious problem.Again I met another surgeon-In fact the best known surgeon in Vijayawada, who opened it.Again same process and treatment with antibiotic. This problem started repeating once in a year for about 8 years and every time the surgeon was opening it and draining.
Finally the surgeon told me the some serious prob em is there with my salivary glands in that area and a major surgery is required to remove it.I really felt upset. In all these years all the doctors I met -including the above doctor-were telling me that it is not serious, and now he is advising for a major surgery!!.Luckily I got an idea to seek a second opinion.
At that time one doctor named Sivarama Prasad opened a hospital called Global Hospital in Vijayawada.I met him one day with my case file. With preliminary examination itself he confirmed that it is most likely a sebaceous cyst.He advised me to meet him when the cyst starts growing.I met him and he removed the same in January 2002.After that it never occur ed-a great relief to me!!
Now after 8 years while looking back ,it is really pity to tell you that it took about 2 decades and more than 7 Doctors to identify a sebaceous cyst!!!
I have written it not for hurting the doctor community, but just for helping the general public.I will be coming with my new experiences in few days.
